In one of previous articles were some links to English websites. Also the part of the article is speaking about the possibility to learn more the most often spoken language all over the world. And I was worried, how many girls will take this opportunity? For example my sister. She is going to sit for the leaving examination in English next year and she was very confused, when I told her my boyfriend is coming. Not because of him, but because of the necessity of speaking in English with him. She knows the grammar and she understand. She is just afraid to speak… And this made me to think – what is the real level of English on Czech public schools? And are the students encouraged to speak and communicate?
As far as I remember, the English classes were desperate. There was mixture of levels in one class and pronunciation of the teacher was terrible. How are these students supposed to learn good English? On the other hand, the students were definitively not the best ones. And now I mean actually about 90% of Czech students of foreign language. It is not just their fault – the system is to blame. If there will be just dubbed movies and serials in television, there is just small chance to practise understanding for wide population. And how many students are voluntary watching movies in the original sound? Or listening of English radio station?
While studying in Norway I got learn one true – it is not so important to speak without mistakes, because everybody is doing mistakes. The more important thing is to want to understand the other speakers and to be understood. The fact is, that Czech students have usually just few hours of English per week and this is not enough, if they want to communicate. They should practise at home or between each other to speak just in English.
Here are some tips, you can do before the holidays are finished:
1) Take your very favourite song in English and try to translate its text. Than sing it with the singer or group and you will practise your pronunciation as well. You can also give a party and sing songs with your friends.
2) Try to watch your favourite movie in English, you can use the subtitles. If you know it already in Czech, it will be easier for you to understand and you will have some time to memorize the English expression.
3) Read as much as possible! There are English books in public libraries, mostly divided according to the level of the difficulty. Pick up some interesting one and read it while sunbathing on the swimming pool. You will look like an intellectual :)
Hopefully you took some inspiration from this article and you will enjoy your English studying!! Please, don´t take this article as a non-mistake one, I am good in speaking, but my grammar needs some improvements as well.
